Welcome to Povertystew

Hello! And welcome to Povertystew.

This blog is, in large part, a cookbook – so the emphasis is on stew.  I’ll talk about the poverty part in a minute.

I want to first issue fair warning that, from time to time, some of my blog entries may include my whining or kvetching about something.  If that doesn’t interest you just scroll down to the recipe.

The recipes featured here in the stew are based on a 1930s depression era zeitgeist – get the very most out of very little.

We’re living in strange times.  The middle class is evaporating.  Good, decent, hardworking men and women – the backbone of America – find themselves downsized, or worse, outsized (not sure if that’s really a word – but you know what I mean).  Young people just starting out face a fragile economy, fierce competition for jobs, and wages that have not kept pace with the cost of living.  The elderly, living on fixed incomes, see their purchasing power shrink year after year.

As you might now have guessed, the poverty in Povertystew requires that all recipes appearing on this blog site includes a savage attempt to save money. With each recipe, I’ll try to conjure up an estimated tab – as best as I can reckon.

If anyone ever reads this blog and would like to add their own variations or improvements on a recipe theme highlighted – or can share on how to scrimp even more to save money – that would be swell.

Please Note: I make no claims that any recipe appearing on this blog would pass the healthy eating test – if there is such a thing.  The aim of the recipes featured here in the stew is more about counting pennies than counting calories.  Sorry about that.

Again, welcome to Povertystew.

Let’s cook something!
